A private investment company, built to back a small number of companies and stay close to them.
The GEM Investment Company is a privately held firm based in Central, Hong Kong.
We invest our own and our partners’ capital into growth-stage businesses building the rails of modern finance.
Our work spans three things: growth funding committed on a clear schedule, secondary liquidity for founders and early shareholders, and structured instruments shaped around each company’s stage. We hold few positions at a time, and we expect to hold them for years.
What we do
Three ways we put capital to work.
We size each engagement to the company in front of us, not to a fixed template. Terms are set out plainly before anything is signed.
Growth capital
Funding committed up front and drawn as the business needs it. We match our commitment to a company’s plan, with a schedule both sides agree.
Secondary liquidity
Founders and early shareholders should be able to realise value without waiting for an exit. We structure secondary purchases that respect the cap table and the people on it.
Structured instruments
Where a priced round is not the right step, we invest through SAFEs and structured notes, with valuation caps and discounts agreed transparently from the start.
Where we focus
A clear mandate, deliberately narrow.
We invest where we have conviction and can be genuinely useful beyond the cheque.
Fintech & financial infrastructure
Payments, collections and disbursements, digital banking, and the technology that connects them.
Africa, the Middle East & Asia
Markets where financial systems are being built and rebuilt, and where access still has room to grow.
